NEW DELHI: The Centre has finalised its draft bill on river Ganga which provides for jail terms and fine to polluters and those who obstruct its flow. The proposed law also has provisions to set up a Ganga Protection Force to keep an eye on polluters and hand over the violators to local police.
The cognisable offences, listed in the draft bill, include throwing non-degradable waste, plastic, batteries and hazardous chemicals into the river, discharge of untreated sewage and effluents, construction in flood plains and commercial fishing. It proposes jail term of 2-7 years with fines up to Rs 5 lakh.Under the proposed law, a Ganga Protection Force will be set up as a central armed police force under the home ministry.
